Gijón once again hosted today a new edition of the Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race with almost 4,000 participants who completed the 5km course and joined the fitness and aerobics festival of more than one hour in Las Mestas, which closed out a festive and sporting day. The victory went to the young runner from Gijón, Irene Rivero, who stopped the clock at 19:55, improving her previous years’ times and earning her second win in this race after her victory in 2022. Rivero has been in the top 5 of runners in Gijón since 2021. She was also fourth in 2024, and stood on the podium as third in 2023 and 2025, and is currently preparing for her participation in the Spanish U23 Championships.
Fifteen seconds later, another regular among the top finishers crossed the finish line in Las Mestas: the Cantabrian runner Dolores Marco, who also knows what it is to win in the Asturian edition of the Women’s Race in previous years. Jéssica López, who was fourth in last year’s edition, moved up one spot in the standings, finishing third with 20:21. Noa Prieto (20:49) and Irene Terciado (20:54) were fourth and fifth, respectively, closing out the top 5 under 21 minutes. The Asturian runner Alba García, 3-time winner of the Gijón Women’s Race and an international athlete with the Spanish national team, was collaborating today with the organization as a speaker, giving the start and welcoming participants at the finish line.
Tributes and charity initiatives
Before the start, the entire “pink tide” paid a beautiful tribute to journalist Cristina Mitre, a major advocate of the benefits of running and sports for women, who has participated in countless editions of the Women’s Race in almost all cities of the national circuit and who is recovering from a bone marrow transplant. A journalist with more than 20 years of experience, Cristina is the author of El Podcast de Cristina Mitre, the most popular online program on health, beauty, nutrition, and fitness in Spain. She also launched in 2023 the narrative podcast Mujeres que corren, which tells stories of women in sports and which we join today in this Women’s Race, the largest women’s sporting event in Europe that since 2004 has encouraged thousands of women to adopt a more active and healthy lifestyle.
A check was also presented to Corazones Solidarios Asturias, the featured project in this edition of the +SolidariAs section, a non-profit association dedicated to carrying out the “Micky heart pillow project” in Asturias. This project consists of making therapeutic cushions with the perfect shape and weight for people who have undergone breast cancer surgery to place under the armpit of the operated breast, helping to ease post-surgery discomfort and improve the recovery process. The organization has donated €1,370 to Corazones Solidarios to pay for all the fabric needed to make the therapeutic cushions for 2027.
In addition, it was possible to secure 50 fully charitable bibs in support of the Galbán Association, which provides psychological, social, and educational support to children with cancer and their families.

About the Women’s Race circuit
The national circuit reached in 2025 the historic milestone of more than 1,600,000 participants since its creation in 2004, consolidating itself as the largest women’s sporting event in Europe. In 2026, its goal remains to promote physical activity, fight cancer, support its research and prevention, and combat gender violence and the inequalities faced by women.
Five editions. That is how long the #laMquefalta movement has been present in the Gijón Women’s Race, giving voice, face, and name to metastatic breast cancer. The initiative, driven by the Spanish Metastatic Breast Cancer Association (AECMM) in collaboration with the Daiichi Sankyo | AstraZeneca Alliance, has turned each edition of the race into a loudspeaker for women living with this disease. When #laMquefalta began in 2022, only 3 out of 10 Spaniards claimed to know for sure what metastatic breast cancer was. Today, 93% of the population has heard of it—an evolution that reflects the true impact of five years of awareness efforts.
The 2026 edition features the main sponsorship of Central Lechera Asturiana, Oysho and Banco Santander; the co-sponsorship of Marlene, Octopus Energy and Neutrogena; Volvo as the official vehicle and Correos Express as the logistics provider. All of this with the collaboration of Cosmo, Cadena Dial and the Daiichi Sankyo | AstraZeneca Alliance. Locally, the Asturian event is supported by the Gijón City Council and the Gijón Athletics Club.
