Archery offers physical benefits such as strengthening the arm and back muscles, improving lymphatic circulation and reducing lymphedema, especially after cancer treatments. On a psychological level, it helps reduce anxiety, stress and improves concentration, coordination and self-confidence, as well as creating a space of social support among patients.
Physical Benefits
-Muscle strengthening: Practicing archery strengthens the arm, back and shoulder muscles, improving mobility and overall strength.
-Prevention and treatment of lymphedema: The vibration and movement of the muscles when drawing and releasing the bow act as a gentle lymphatic massage, promoting drainage and reducing fluid buildup in the arm, which can be a consequence of surgery or radiotherapy.
-Posture improvement: The correct and upright posture required to shoot the bow strengthens the back, which can improve overall posture and relieve tension.
-Shoulder girdle exercise: Archery specifically works the shoulder girdle (shoulders and shoulder blades), an important area that is often not exercised after certain treatments, such as mastectomy.
Psychological and Emotional Benefits
-Reduction of anxiety and stress: The concentration needed to focus and shoot the arrow helps reduce anxiety and release stress associated with the illness.
-Improved concentration and coordination: The sport requires great concentration and coordination, which can improve these skills in patients’ daily lives.
-Increased self-confidence: Regaining arm mobility and feeling capable of using it again strengthens patients’ confidence and peace of mind.
-Social support: Practicing in a group offers a space for companionship and mutual support among patients, allowing them to share experiences and feel part of a community.
