Today the Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race of Gijón 2025 was held with 5,000 participants who turned the streets of Gijón pink on a sporting and solidarity-filled morning, highlighting the role of women in sports and in society in general. Athlete Esther Ramos claimed her first victory leading the Asturian “pink wave”, the fifth event of the national series, and was the first woman to cross the finish line located at the Las Mestas racecourse.
The 5,000 women, who completed the slightly more than 5km course, joined the event to promote women’s sports, solidarity, the fight against breast cancer, and against gender-based violence. After crossing the finish line, they took part in a full one-hour fitness and aerobics festival that closed the day’s activities.
Before the start, an emotional tribute was paid to Asturian Paralympian Verónica Rodríguez, a two-time Olympian and a true role model in the world of sports for girls and women in the region.
Esther Ramos led the “Pink Wave” of the Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race of Gijón stopping the clock at Las Mestas in 19:27, finishing more than half a minute ahead of María García, who placed second. Third place went to the very young Irene Rivero, who was unable to repeat her brilliant victory from the 2022 edition on this same course. Jéssica Lopéz and Sara García were fourth and fifth, respectively, rounding out the top 5 women at the finish.
In 2025 the goal will remain to promote running and aerobic exercise among women of all ages, fight against cancer, raise funds to support research, and raise awareness about the importance of early prevention, as well as combat gender-based violence and the social and educational inequalities experienced by women in all areas.
At the end of the series, a donation of 90,000 euros will be made to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, and 1,000€ will also be donated to Wanawake Mujer, which fights against female genital mutilation and other forms of violence against women; the GEICAM Foundation, leaders in breast cancer research; and the Clara Campoamor Association, which defends women’s rights in all fields.
In addition, there was an option to purchase up to 50 charity bibs in support of the Galbán Association (a non-profit organization), which provides psychological, social, and educational support to children with cancer and their families. In the +SolidariAs section this year in Gijón, we introduced the “Corazones Solidarios Asturias” Association.
In 2025 the Spanish Association of Metastatic Breast Cancer was also present in Asturias. The #laMquefalta movement, launched by the Daiichi Sankyo | AstraZeneca Alliance and the Spanish Association of Metastatic Breast Cancer (ACMM), calls citizens, companies, and institutions to action to highlight the metastatic stage of breast cancer and raise awareness in society about this disease. The conversation about breast cancer is incomplete if metastasis is not addressed, and currently it is little known by the general population. This movement aims to emphasize the particularities, treatment approaches, and needs of patients with metastatic breast cancer, which affects more people each year in our country.
The national series of the Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race 2025 is mainly sponsored by Central Lechera Asturiana, Oysho, and Banco Santander, together with TotalEnergies and Marlene. Volvo is the official vehicle of the series, MRW the official courier, and Renfe the official train. They are joined by Batiste, Cosmo, Dial, and the Daiichi-Sankyo Astrazeneca Alliance. Local sponsors include Ziaja, Fontarel, Basic Fit, Gijón Atletismo, and the City Council of Gijón.
