The race will cover 6.3 kilometres along the seafront promenade and will pay tribute to Adiaratou Iglesias. In addition, the day will combine the race with a festival of guided activities.

A Coruña’s seafront promenade will once again fill with runners this Sunday for the Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race. The event will bring together women of different generations around a shared goal: enjoying sport, giving visibility to female participation and encouraging more women to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives.

The A Coruña event is part of the largest women’s sporting event in Europe, a circuit that visits nine cities and that, over its 22-year history, has held more than 150 races and brought together more than 1.5 million participants. These figures reflect the reach of an initiative that works to expand the presence of women in sport and create spaces in which to practise it, enjoy it and feel like protagonists.

The race, which will start at 10:00 on Sunday 27 September, offers a 6.3-kilometre route by the sea. An opportunity to share the effort and excitement of crossing the finish line, both for those who make sport a regular part of their lives and for those who find in this event the motivation to begin.

A Coruña City Council hosted the presentation of the event this Friday, with the participation of Adiaratou Iglesias, Paralympic champion in Tokyo 2020 in the 100 metres and silver medallist in the 400 metres, as well as world champion in the 200 metres in Dubai 2019. The athlete wanted to highlight sport as a tool for unity and, at the same time, show her support for women and refugees.

“For me it is always a pleasure to take part in initiatives like this, especially here in Galicia, which I feel is my home. I want to help give a voice to refugees and encourage everyone to practise sport, because sport is health, it is unity and it is a space where we learn many values that we can then apply in our lives. As a woman, moreover, I know the difficulties we still encounter in many areas, so it is a source of pride to be here supporting both refugees and all women,” declared Adiaratou Iglesias.

For her part, Nereida Cadosa, Councillor for Social Welfare, Participation and Equality of A Coruña City Council, highlighted that “this Sunday we will once again see thousands of women running through our streets: women who run regularly and others for whom putting on that race bib is already quite a challenge. There is room for everyone and each person will be able to complete the course at her own pace. It is absolutely moving to see girls, older women, wheelchair users and diverse women together. It seems especially important to us that younger girls grow up seeing their role models doing sport, dedicating time to themselves and occupying public spaces freely.”

Six kilometres by the sea

The start and finish lines will be located on Avenida de Buenos Aires, at the level of Avenida Buenos Aires, next to the sports complex. From there, participants will continue along Avenida Barrié de la Maza and the Alcalde Francisco Vázquez seafront promenade to the Torre de Hércules roundabout. The return will take place along the same streets, following the direction of traffic, until completing the 6.3 kilometres.

The route will allow participants to enjoy one of the city’s most recognisable spaces on a morning in which women will be the protagonists. Each participant will arrive with her own challenge, but all will share an experience that seeks to reinforce confidence, create bonds through sport and inspire the desire to keep practising it after Sunday.

Sport as a meeting space for refugee women

The Women’s Race and UNHCR are extending their collaboration to A Coruña, continuing a partnership that has already encouraged the participation of refugee women in sport in cities such as Madrid and Valencia. Thanks to this initiative, twenty-eight refugee women will be able to take part in the race with free race bibs provided by the organisation, sharing a day of sport and connection with the rest of the participants.

In a year marking the 75th anniversary of UNHCR and the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, this collaboration will also be reflected along the route: one of the kilometres will be symbolically dedicated to refugees, in recognition of the women who, like the participants in this initiative, have found in sport a space for connection and belonging.

The initiative will also feature the presence of Adiaratou Iglesias, Paralympic athlete and UNHCR collaborator, who will receive a tribute before the race and will be responsible for firing the starting gun.

In addition, the event will also feature the collaboration of Semilla para el Cambio, which works for the employability and economic autonomy of women in vulnerable situations; and ACADAR, which will receive all proceeds from the solidarity race bib. For their part, Auga Dragon Boat and Bolboretas Curña will also be present in the post-finish area to introduce rowing to participants. All information about the social commitment of the circuit can be found on the transparency portal.

A morning to keep moving

Sunday’s programme will begin at 9:50 with recognition for Semilla para el Cambio, as part of the event’s social commitment. At 9:55 there will be recognition for Iglesias, followed by the start of the race at 10:00.

The arrival of the first runner is expected at around 10:23 and, at 11:00, the top five finishers in the overall category will be recognised.

The activity will continue after crossing the finish line with the aerobics and fitness festival, an invitation to continue enjoying exercise in a group setting. At 11:05 the Central Lechera Asturiana warm-up session with Termaria Casa del Agua will begin. This will be followed by Latino at 11:15; Zumba at 11:30; Ballet Fit at 11:45; and Aerotono at 12:00.

The prize-giving ceremony for the remaining categories will take place at 12:15 and the sporting event is scheduled to conclude at 13:00.

From the race to the stands at Riazor

Sunday will also offer the chance to support other sportswomen from the stands. The RC Deportivo Foundation collaborates with the Women’s Race by donating tickets for the match between Dépor women and RCD Espanyol at 18:00 at Riazor.

Each participant will be able to obtain two tickets, while supplies last, using their promotional code via the link enabled for this initiative. The proposal will make it possible to extend the sporting day and transfer the runners’ support to women’s football, creating a meeting point between the runners and the players of the A Coruña team.

Race bib collection at Palexco

The runner’s fair and race bib collection will take place at Palexco, at the Transatlantic Pier. Participants may attend on Friday 25 September, from 16:00 to 20:00, and on Saturday 26, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00.

It will be the first meeting point of a weekend that invites women to get moving, share their challenges and make sport their own space.
